How do you get stains out of a white ATV plastic?

How do you remove stains from white ATV plastic?

It is a fact that after a ride, the ATV gets dirty. If the ATV color is white, then it gets covered with so much dust and dirt that it becomes difficult to identify it. It might take a whole day to clean it.

Cleaning of the ATV simply involves the following steps.

  1. Pre-soaking
  2. Pressure washing
  3. Washing with detergent
  4. Drying
  5. Polishing

The above-mentioned steps are to be followed to clean up a muddy ATV to make it look better. But if your ATV is white in color, then some additional steps are to be followed to give it back the original shine and color.

What plastic are ATVs made from?

Most parts of a quad bike or an ATV is typically made of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) based materials. These are oily plastic materials or sometimes known as olefinic plastic. These types allow dirt, including mud to wash off easily.

How to clean polyethylene plastic

  1. Rinse the HDPE bottle or container with cool running water.
  2. Fill the bottle with a squirt of liquid dish soap and room temperature water.
  3. Allow the water to soak in the bottle for one hour.
  4. Pour the water out of the bottle.
  5. Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the soapy water.

What Causes Plastics to Fade?

The reason for a crack in the plastic is quite obvious, but the cause of fade plastic of an ATV or a quad is difficult to explain.

Plastic is manufactured from crude oil in its refined form. When this plastic is exposed to sun and heat for an extended period of time, the surface oils evaporate, causing the plastic to dry. This dried plastic loses its shine and gets faded. When this plastic becomes extremely dry, it can get cracked, which is sometimes difficult to repair.

The faded plastic appears differently at the surface, depending upon its color. If the plastic is of dark color, then a white layer gets formed at the top of the plastic. This layer can be removed by scraping off with a razor blade, leaving a dull color under it. The light-colored plastics turn yellow due to the exposure to the sun as the heat from the sun dries out the plastic.

Why does white paint turn yellow?

Most of the paints are oil-based alkyd paints. These paints are durable and can be frequently used without any change in its color. With the passage of time, these paints might turn yellow in color due to some of its chemical components. There are some environmental factors as well, which determine the color of the paints.

Steps to whiten the plastic

If you own a white ATV, then some additional cleaning is required because on a white plastic body, even a single speck of dirt is quite evident. So take the following measures for some additional cleaning.

  1. Take a bucket or a big bowl and fill it with one part of water and one part of bleach.
  2. Soak the white plastic parts in it. If the white plastic parts are large enough and can not be soaked in the bucket, then another way is to be followed. Wear gloves first, take paper towels and soak them in the bleach solution.
  3. Take them out and cover the yellowed plastic parts with these wet paper towels.
  4. The best bleach product meant for ATVs is the Westly’s bleach white. Spray it on the white ATV plastic.
  5. Wipe it with a soft cloth. Leave for some time and pressure wash it off.
  6. Dry and clean it up. It gives back the real shine just as you have bought a new one.

In addition, if there are some small white plastic parts, you can simply bleach them. Removing the pale color can also be done using chlorine bleach. First of all, make a solution using one tablespoon of bleach per cup of water. Soak the pale plastic parts in it for a few hours. Remove them and rinse with water. You will be left with white shiny plastic parts.

Clorox spray bleach works like magic on white plastic. Take a medium bristled brush and use it to apply bleach on the stains, leave for some time, and then wash with water. It removes the stains without leaving the white plastic dull and rough.

How to remove scratches from the white plastic?

On a plastic body of the ATV, mostly two types of scratches are encountered. One is the light scratches, and the other is the deeper ones.

Light scratches

Light scratches occur due to the hitting of bushes or branches of the trees on the plastic body and leaving behind little visible marks. Many people don’t worry much about these light scratches and just mend them with a piece of chalk. But those people who have spent a lot of money buying their ATV or quad, even a minor scratch, mean a lot to them. Those who are very possessive about their quad don’t want even a single scratch on its body.

Removal of Light scratches

One of the best methods to remove light scratches is by using 1500 Grit Wet Sandpaper. Just rub the sandpaper over the scratched area and buff it out. In order to make it brand new again, after buffing, you can apply a coat of plastic restorer.

Wet sandpaper can even be used for medium to deep scratches. In case of a deep scratch, you can start removing it with 400 grit wet sandpaper and then moving to 1500 grit to end up with a smooth surface. Some people believe that using sandpaper to remove a scratch is just a wastage of energy and time. Too much rubbing can remove a lot of plastic from the surface. As a result, the plastic loses its integrity and becomes more prone to cracks.

Deep scratches

They are the ones that occur deep in the plastic body as a result of hitting with some heavy object or due to some accident.

Removal of Deep scratches

For deep scratches, a plastic bond/filler is recommended. The most famous and common to use is the JB Weld Plastic Bonder Gap Filler. It works best for small cracks or the ones which are just less than a few inches. But if the scratch is bigger in size, then you have to go for some other option. It is an easy to use formula. It comes in the packaging of two tubes. Just squeeze both the tubes simultaneously, mix the contents in a 1 to 1 ratio. Apply the mixture to the deep scratches. It takes around about 20 minutes to set, and after half an hour, you can sand it down.

If a putty knife is used to apply the mixture, then it is easy to clean the excess of the mixture after filling the scratch. The drawback of using this filler is that it ends up in black color, which makes the filled scratch quite obvious on the white plastic body. So it is recommended to paint the ATV body afterward.

If proper care of the ATV plastic is not done, then over time, they could dry out and ultimately break or get cracked. Cracked plastic can still be repaired. If you are unwilling to buy new plastic spare parts, then you have to repair it yourself.

For big and deep scratches, Astro 7600 Hot Staple Gun Kit is recommended. It just has amazing results. This hot gun comes with specially designed staples. It works by heating these staples and setbacks the plastic in place by making some special strong bond still retaining the flexible ability of the plastic.

By using a hot staple gun, you just have to keep the piece of broken plastic in place, and the hot gun joins them in their place. The staple gets heated, gets sunken into the plastic to a little extent, and as a result, a strong bond gets formed. Stapling should be done on the underside of the plastic; even after stapling the plastic, a minor crack appears on the upper side of the plastic body. To fill in this minor crack, JB Weld can be used, and the excess plastic can be smoothened using sandpaper.
